On November 6th, the UT Graduate Workers Union officially reached a 100 union members, with at least one union member in over 40 academic departments. This represents dramatic growth since our launch event in September.
The union members, who come from different walks of life and academic backgrounds, have all made a pledge to engage in labor actions that have been democratically decided on by the union. In doing so they have chosen to stand with their fellow students in the fight for better wages and working conditions - to not turn their backs on graduate students who are dealing with an abusive boss or struggling to put food on the table for their family.
This is a great start, but it is just the beginning. We need to continue to expand rapidly if we want to be able to seriously challenge the University over wages, working conditions, political changes at the University, and all other issues that affect graduate students. We must win these fights, and we will have the power to do so if more graduate students swell our ranks and bring with them the unique knowledge, perspectives, and skills that will take the movement forward. But if you are a graduate student reading this, and you are not in the union yet, we need your help to make it happen. Join us and be a person who is willing to fight for their coworkers - who is willing to fight for what is right.
